Everything you need to know about microwave oven stands

The first ever commercially available microwave was the “Radarange” launched in 1947. Its makers could not have conceived that microwave ovens would become such an important part in the way we cook food and at such a scale. However microwaves use microwave radiation and not everyone understands how dangerous it can be when not used according to guidelines.

To be safe many people use specially designed stands that protect the rest of the house in case of fire or a small explosion. With the increase in sales of microwaves over the last few decades, the popularity of such stands has also increased.

Types

There are two major types of microwave stands that are currently available on the market – top surface stands and cubby stands. The first is a basic design in which the microwave oven sits on the counter top which is open in all sides. It has ability to hold the microwave efficiently and even offers additional space for storing a wide range of kitchen products from knives to utensils and plates.

Usually these storage places are located below and models come in different colors and materials. In cubby stands, the microwave is enclosed by the stand on the two sides and usually has cabinets with closed shelving. They usually have multiple drawers too and the design is much more elaborate in cubby stands. Both types of stands come in two variations – fixed stands and mobile. In mobile stands, wheels are attached at the bottom that can be unlocked when you wish to move the stand.

Features

Besides having a compartment to store the microwave most stands today have additional features like drawers, shelves and wheels. Drawers are not common in most models and a single drawer spanning the width of the stand is most typical. These can be very useful in storing commonly used items like microwave bowls and microwave mitts.

Shelves are usually present which can be used to store anything from cookbooks to perishable food items. Wheels that come with mobile stands can make it unbelievably easy to make your kitchen more flexible.

This means when you are planning to remodel your kitchen, you just have to unlock the wheels at the bottom and you can push it around as you please. Stands today come in different types of materialsfrom wood, metal or a combination of both. Some expensive stands even have marble topsto give the model a really classy look
